Senior Software Development Engineer
Software Full-Time NJ
The position
The Elastic Container Service (ECS) Observability organization is a growing team with an exciting roadmap. Our mission is to provide important information to Amazon’s ECS customers so that they can monitor the health and status of their container deployments, as well as to enable them to conduct various types of analyses using the information. We do this by collecting and processing telemetry data from AWS containers. The team’s responsibilities include building high performance software products and tools to gather distributed logs, traces and metrics for monitoring applications and services. These tools also enable customers to send correlated metrics and traces to other AWS monitoring solutions such as Amazon CloudWatch, AWS X-Ray, Amazon Elasticsearch and to a variety of other 3rd-party solutions. It also collects underlying container resource metrics on CPU/GPU, Memory and Storage to correlate with application performance data. One of several key goals is to reduce the time it takes to detect and resolve service issues.
Responsibilities
- The solutions are deployed to AWS container services such as ECS, Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS), AWS Fargate, and others.
- Work/Life Balance
Our team puts a high value on work-life balance. Most days, our entire team is co-located in the Seattle office, but we’re also flexible when people occasionally need to work from home. We generally keep core in-office hours from 10am to 4pm. About half of us come in earlier and the other half of us stay later. - On-Call Responsibility
This position involves on-call responsibilities, typically for one week every two months. We don’t like getting paged in the middle of the night or on the weekend, so we work to ensure that our systems are fault tolerant. When we do get paged, we work together to resolve the root cause so that we don’t get paged for the same issue twice. - Mentorship & Career Growth
Our team is dedicated to supporting new team members. Our team has a broad mix of experience levels and Amazon tenures, and we’re building an environment that celebrates knowledge sharing and mentorship. Our senior engineers truly enjoy mentoring more junior engineers and engineers from non-traditional backgrounds through one-on-one mentoring and thorough, but kind, code reviews.
We care about your career growth. We try to assign projects and tasks based on what will help each team member develop into a better-rounded engineer and enable them to take on more complex tasks in the future.

- 3+ years of programming experience with at least one software programming language.
- 2+ years of experience contributing to the system design or architecture (architecture, design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and current systems.
- Experience as a mentor, tech lead OR leading an engineering team.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong, object-oriented design and coding skills (C/C++ and/or Java preferably on a UNIX or Linux platform)
- Experience with distributed (multi-tiered) systems, algorithms, and relational databases.
